Fuel shortages in Gaza at ‘critical levels’, UN warns

  • UN agencies: ‘When fuel runs out, it places an unbearable new burden on a population teetering on the edge of starvation’

GENEVA: The United Nations warned Saturday that dire fuel shortages in the Gaza Strip had reached “critical levels,” threatening to dramatically increase the suffering in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.

“After almost two years of war, people in Gaza are facing extreme hardships, including widespread food insecurity. When fuel runs out, it places an unbearable new burden on a population teetering on the edge of starvation,” seven UN agencies cautioned in a joint statement.

Oman postpones Muscat International Book Fair amid Iran war

  • 30th edition of event was due to open on March 26

LONDON: Oman has postponed the Muscat International Book Fair due to the Iran war and increased tensions in the Gulf region.

Minister of Information Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Harrasi, who chairs the fair’s committee, said the event would be held at a later date, the Oman News Agency reported.

The 30th edition of the fair was scheduled to run from March 26 to April 5.

Al-Harrasi said the decision followed a thorough assessment of the circumstances in the region. Oman is one of several Gulf states to have been hit by Iranian drones since the conflict began.

The country was committed to providing the best possible conditions for the cultural event to ensure its success, Al-Harrasi said.
