ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan cricket team arrived in New York on Friday to play arch-rivals India in what is expected to be a nail-biting Twenty20 World Cup fixture, as reported by state-run media on Friday, after suffering a stunning defeat from the USA home team that shocked fans all over the world.
A Super Over thriller in Texas saw T20 World Cup debutants beat the 2022 finalists and 2009 winners in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition. Pakistan must win the rest of the group matches to qualify for the next stage.
The team’s group includes India, Ireland, Canada and the USA.
“The Consulate General of Pakistan in New York is pleased to announce the arrival of the Pakistan national cricket team in New York today, for their participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024,” PTV News said in a post on X. “The team, led by Captain Babar
Azam, was warmly received by Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai.”
The Green Shirts are set to compete in a series of exciting matches throughout the month, including two matches in New York on June 9 and 11.
Pakistani officials have urged the diaspora and cricket enthusiasts in New York to come out in large numbers to support the team.
The T20 World Cup is still in its group stage, with the final set to be played on June 29.
