RIYADH: Bahar, a camel owned by Qatari Jaber Salem Al-Jarboi, came out on top in the “Lqaya” category of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Camel Festival on Saturday, clocking in at 7 minutes 27 seconds, Saudi Press Agency reported.
Organized by the Saudi Camel Federation, the inaugural edition of the festival commenced last Thursday at the Al-Janadriyah arena in Riyadh and is scheduled to run until Feb. 18.
The races in the Lqaya category finished on Saturday, having featuring a total of 28 races divided between morning and evening sessions. The evening races included four major prize events.
A total of 968 camels participated, with 566 in the morning races and 402 in the evening races.
The Kingdom’s camel sector is backed by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whose support aims to maintain camel racing’s stauts as the Saudi national sport and preserve its cultural significance for future generations, SPA added.
