ISLAMABAD: The top diplomats of Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates on Saturday discussed the raging conflict in Gaza over a phone call and emphasized a “coordinated response” after Hamas said nine captives, including four foreigners, had been killed in Israeli airstrikes over the last 24 hours.
Israel deployed warplanes to target residential neighborhoods in Gaza following Hamas’s surprise weekend offensive that claimed the lives of several hundred people.
Hamas justified the attack by citing the deteriorating living conditions in Gaza where 2.3 million Palestinians live under Israel’s land, air, and sea blockades since 2006.
Pakistan’s interim foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani spoke with his UAE counterpart over the phone and demanded “cessation of hostilities.”
“Received a call from HH Sheikh #Abdullah_bin_Zayed, Foreign Minister of UAE,” Jilani said in a social media post. “We discussed escalating situation in #Gaza, the urgent need for cessation of hostilities and protection of civilians.”
“A coordinated response was emphasised,” he added.
The Israeli forces have besieged Gaza and ordered hundreds of thousands of its residents to evacuate ahead of a ground offensive.
The United Nations asked the authorities in Israel a day earlier to rescind its order for the immediate relocation of 1.1 million people from north to south Gaza amid relentless aerial bombardment.
Israel has now cut off water, electricity and food supplies, compounding the humanitarian crisis already unfolding in the Palestinian territory.
