Mavericks and Timberwolves ready to face off in first of NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2023

  • Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves play each other twice at Etihad Arena Oct. 5-7

ABU DHABI: Across two separate sessions, the stars of the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves took to the court at Etihad Arena on Wednesday for their final practice workouts ahead of Thursday’s official tip-off of the second edition of the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2023 Presented by ADQ.

Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Rudy Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and the rest of the two visiting teams’ rosters ran through a series of offensive and defensive drills under the watchful eyes of Jason Kidd and Chris Finch, the respective coaches of the Mavericks and Timberwolves.

Players from both teams looked relaxed under the lights, enjoying their first experience of the Etihad Arena, and Abu Dhabi in general. Post-session, Irving, Gobert, and Edwards expressed their excitement at being part of the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2023 following last year’s inaugural event featuring the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks.

“The experience in Abu Dhabi, and especially the desert yesterday, has been incredible — more beautiful than the pictures could ever make it out to be. I’m really enjoying myself,” said Irving. “It’s amazing to see how (the) NBA has been able to market the brand internationally and turn the game into something (people) from all over the world … can strive to be a part of. The love of the game connects all of us.”

The Timberwolves are equally as determined to hit the ground running. Playing a strong team such as the Mavs in pre-season can only quicken that process, said Edwards.

“It is great coming back to Abu Dhabi and showing our game here. It’s an incredible experience, and I am super happy for the city to have us play here. During my last visit, I saw the excitement of our fans, and this time as well we got to put on a show for them especially,” said the 2023 NBA All-Star.

Talking about his game, he said: “We don’t take the preseason games lightly. We want to come out and figure out the chemistry between the two teams. It is super important, and we take this super seriously.”

France-born three-time Defensive Player of the Year Gobert said: “It’s my first time in Abu Dhabi and playing at the Etihad Arena … and it has been pretty busy but quite fun at the same time. Winning or losing doesn’t matter as of now, but the way we approach those games and the focus we are going to have on the details are important.”

He added: “I went to the grand mosque yesterday, which was amazing, and I am excited to visit the desert today, the beach, and also explore the landscape of Abu Dhabi.”

Guardiola hails Man City’s ‘massive’ win over Newcastle

  • Guardiola’s second-placed side closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points with their tense victory at the Etihad Stadium

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom: Pep Guardiola labelled Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday as a “massive” moment in the Premier League title race.
Guardiola’s second-placed side closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points with their tense victory at the Etihad Stadium.
Nico O’Reilly put City ahead in the first half and restored the lead before half-time after Lewis Hall had equalized.
City weren’t at their best in the second half, but they held on to pile pressure on spluttering Arsenal, who travel to Tottenham for the north London derby on Sunday.
Guardiola knew it was essential to make Arsenal sweat.
“Massive. Newcastle is an incredible team, awesome in physicality and speed they have up front. Physicality in the middle. Really tough but the team was unbelievable,” he said.
“It’s coming in best part of the season. Every single game will be similar to today.”
After finishing without a trophy last season, City are back in the hunt for the seventh English title of Guardiola’s reign.
They will have a game in hand on Arsenal after this weekend and are guaranteed to win the title if they win their last 11 league matches.
Guardiola has embarked on an expensive overhaul of City’s squad in the last 12 months, shedding aging stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Ederson and Kyle Walker and bringing in the likes of Marc Guehi, Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.
The Spaniard is well aware that his new generation largely lacks the experience of winning under the pressure of a title race, which made their gritty success against Newcastle even more meaningful.
“70 percent of the players have never been in that situation, and I don’t play. So we have to live it, they know that every game will be like this,” he said.
“Especially at home, with five home games left. Today was the best crowd of the year, it was unbelievable with our people, really proud to be manager of these incredible people and fans.
“Of course in terms of points it’s important, but we have to improve to have chance to compete until the end. Now we deserve three more days off. Then another battle in Leeds.”
Guardiola singled out O’Reilly for praise after the young England midfielder’s pair of clinical finishes showed he won’t be affected by the strain of chasing Arsenal.
“Nico give us in the middle that physicality that we need. He now plays in his position,” he said.
“He has always played that, he is so complete and so young. I am really pleased the academy produced these incredible players, Nico, Phil (Foden), Rico (Lewis).”
