Q. Is it permissible to brush one’s teeth during the day of fasting, particularly if one is using toothpaste?

A. Brushing one’s teeth during the day of fasting is not encouraged, particularly if one is using toothpaste, because of fear that one may swallow some toothpaste in the process. It is not encouraged because the Prophet says that the smell of a fasting person’s mouth is better, in God’s view, than musk.
