British school Reigate Grammar opens in Riyadh

  • Headmaster of RGS said quality of education at the school ensures doors of opportunities are open for students

RIYADH: The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced on Tuesday the opening of Reigate Grammar School in Riyadh.

The British school in Riyadh is being established under the international schools attraction program, an initiative to attract major international schools to the Saudi capital, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Investment.

The program has already attracted several other prestigious international schools, including King’s College School, SEK International School, Aldenham School, Downe House School, and One World International School.

Reigate Grammar School was founded in 1675 and has sister schools and partnerships in China, Vietnam and Morocco. RGS Riyadh is the first of several schools planned for Saudi Arabia.

“We are committed to participating in enhancing Riyadh’s education scene. The presence of new international schools in the capital city will further enrich the learning experience of all residents,” acting general manager of education sector development at RCRC Hala Halawani said.

“These schools are in line with our ambitious vision to position Riyadh among the leading city economies in the world. RCRC believes the education sector can play a significant role in enhancing the quality of life in Riyadh, and make it one of the best global cities in which to live, learn and work,” she added.

Headmaster of RGS Shaun Fenton said the quality of education at the school ensures that doors of opportunities are open for its students and that they are equipped academically and emotionally to make the most of those life chances.

“The students and staff at RGS Riyadh are joining an interconnected global community, where the primary focus is happiness, wellbeing and academic success,” he said.

RGS Riyadh offers the British curriculum from nursery level through to GCSEs and A-Levels, and is currently admitting boys and girls.

Saudi foreign ministry condemns Iranian drone attack on US embassy in Riyadh

  • The embassy issued a shelter in place notice for Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam

RIYADH: A statement from the Saudi foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned Iran’s attack on the United States Embassy building in Riyadh after preliminary assessments indicated two drones targeted the facility.

The Saudi Defense Ministry said eight drones were intercepted and destroyed near Riyadh and Al-Kharj. The incident caused a limited fire and minor material damage to the embassy, with no reported injuries.

Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its right to take all measures to defend itself and its interests, including the right to respond.

Reports from early Tuesday described a loud blast and visible flames at the American embassy, with black smoke rising over Riyadh’s diplomatic quarter, where many foreign missions are located.

The US Embassy issued a security alert for Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, announcing it would remain closed and that all routine and emergency American Citizen Services appointments were cancelled. The shelter-in-place notice remains active, and American citizens were advised to avoid embassy premises until further notice.

The embassy also urged travelers to review the most recent Security Alerts, reconsider travel plans in case of possible disruptions, and prioritize their safety and that of their families.
