Asia Cup 2022: Injured Shahnawaz Dahani ruled out of Pakistan-India Super Four clash

  • Shahnawaz Dahani suffers side strain while bowling against Hong Kong
  • Injuries have already ruled Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim out of Asia Cup

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will take the field against India on Sunday without right-arm pacer Shahnawaz Dahani, who has been ruled out of the match owing to an injury, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Saturday.

Dahani has been part of the Asia Cup playing XI that took the field against India and Hong Kong in this year's Asia Cup. The fast bowler took one wicket and gave away seven runs in the only two overs he bowled against Hong Kong on Friday night.

The PCB said it was while bowling the match that Dahani suffered a side strain. The injury could prove to be a blow for Pakistan, who are already feeling the absence of pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim. Both were ruled out of the Asia Cup before Pakistan played their first match of the tournament, due to injuries.

"Shahnawaz Dahani will not be available for Sunday’s ACC T20 Asia Cup Super-4 match against India due to a suspected side strain," the PCB said in a statement.

The board said that as is the case with any suspected side strain injury, the medical team will monitor Dahani for the next 48-72 hours. The medical team would then take decisions, which could include carrying out a scan or deciding whether the bowler will play in the future matches of the tournament or not.

Pakistan decimated Hong Kong by 155 runs on Friday night, after amassing 193 runs on the scoreboard. In response, the minnows could only manage to score 38 runs as Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz and Dahani divided the wickets between themselves to trigger a Hong Kong collapse.

Pakistan lost their opening match of the Asia Cup 2022 tournament to India by 5 wickets in Dubai.

Pakistan inflation slows to 5.6% in December

  • Falling prices of perishable food items drove a monthly decline
  • Central bank warns inflation may rise again later this fiscal year

KARACHI: Pakistan’s consumer price inflation slowed to 5.6% year-on-year in December, while prices fell on a monthly basis, official data showed on Thursday.

The data comes after Pakistan’s central bank cut its key policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.5% last ‌month, breaking a four-meeting ‌hold, in a move ‌that surprised markets. ‌All analysts polled by Reuters had expected rates to remain unchanged at the December meeting.

Inflation eased from 6.1% in November and marked a sharp slowdown from levels that peaked above 30% in 2023, according to official data.

Lower prices of perishable food items helped drive the monthly decline, the Pakistan Bureau of ‌Statistics said, with food prices falling ‍1.7% month-on-month in ‍December, led by declines in both urban and ‍rural areas.

The finance ministry had said on Wednesday that inflation was expected to remain moderate at 5.5%–6.5% in December.

The State Bank of Pakistan has said inflation stayed within its 5%–7% target range during the July–November period but warned that core inflation remains sticky and headline inflation could rise temporarily toward the end of this fiscal year, which ends in June, due to base effects.

Non-food inflation remained elevated in both urban and rural areas in December, underscoring the central bank’s concerns over persistent underlying price pressures.

The central bank has said the inflation outlook remains broadly unchanged, while the International Monetary Fund has cautioned against ‌premature monetary easing under Pakistan’s $7 billion loan program.
