Saudi Arabia will welcome Hayya fan card holders during 2022 World Cup in Qatar

  • Fans who possess one of the cards can apply for an electronic multiple-entry visa that allows them to remain in Saudi Arabia for up to 60 days
  • Qatar previously announced that anyone wishing to enter the country to attend World Cup matches will have to apply for the mandatory Hayya card to do so

RIYADH: Holders of the 2022 Qatar World Cup Hayya card are welcome to visit Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

The card, which Doha authorities will issue to all football fans attending the competition, allows holders to enter Qatar and access stadiums. Other benefits include free public transport on match days. The world cup kicks off on November 20 and continues through December.

The ministry said that holders of a Hayya card will be able to apply for an electronic visa that allows them to enter the Kingdom beginning 10 days before the start of the competition. It added that applications will be made through the Saudi Unified National Visa Platform and full details of the process will be announced later.

Successful applicants will receive a multiple-entry visa that allows them to remain in the Kingdom for up to 60 days. Previous entry to Qatar is not required but all visitors must have medical insurance.

Khalid Al-Rubian, a member of the Saudi Sport Marketing Association, told Arab news that it is important that government departments coordinate their efforts to take advantage of the great opportunity the World Cup provides to attract visitors to the Kingdom.

“Saudi government agencies should work together to create a unified system to maximize investment during the World Cup being held in a neighboring country,” he said.

He highlighted the vital roles of the Ministry of Tourism and the General Entertainment Authority in marketing Saudi tourism to football fans during the competition by introducing them to Saudi Arabia and top attractions in the country that are “historical, religious, cultural or in geographical areas attractive to travelers.”

Mutaz Abugabala, the executive director of Business Solutions Group, which specializes in event management, said investment in tourism is part of the Kingdom’s plans to develop and diversify the economy to reduce its dependence on oil.

Sultan Al-Mutairi, director of the research center at King Saud University’s Faculty of Tourism and Antiquities, said tourism is a sector in which economic activity is growing in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He added that tourists are interest in visiting nations in the region because of their “cultural excellence.”

Unifying entry regulations of countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council area would help to make them more attractive as potential hosts of events and provide opportunities for enhanced marketing efforts, said Al-Mutairi.

The Kingdom’s Eastern Province is likely to be one of the most popular tourist destinations during the World Cup, he predicted. Al-Ahsa, for example, offers a variety of attractive destinations, he said, including its date-palm oasis, which is a World Heritage Site, while Qatif’s old city and many other archaeological sites are also known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Local airlines previously announced that they will provide hundreds of daily shuttle flights during the World Cup for football fans traveling to Qatar from across the Gulf region. Saudia said it will operate 40 flights a day, with carriers in the UAE, Kuwait and Oman announcing similar plans.

Mbappé equals ‘idol’ Ronaldo with his record 59th goal in a year for Real Madrid

  • “It’s incredible, in my first (full) year to do what Cristiano did. (He’s) my idol, the best player in the history of Real Madrid,” Mbappé said

BARCELONA, Spain: Kylian Mbappé scored his 59th goal for Real Madrid in 2025 on Saturday to equal the club record for the most in a year held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The milestone was about to escape the France striker until he converted a penalty kick with four minutes left to complete a 2-0 win over 10-man Sevilla in Madrid’s final game of the year.
Mbappé matched Ronaldo’s tally from 2013 on his 27th birthday. After embracing his teammates, he marked the feat with a subdued version of Ronaldo’s trademark goal celebration — whereby the Portugal forward leaps up and thrusts his arms downwards upon landing — before blowing a kiss at the television cameras.
The former Paris Saint-Germain star, who joined Madrid in the summer of 2024, has scored 29 times for Madrid this season, including a league-leading 18.
“It’s incredible, in my first (full) year to do what Cristiano did. (He’s) my idol, the best player in the history of Real Madrid,” Mbappé said.
“My celebration is for him. I wanted to do that because he helped me adapt here and now I can help Madrid win games with my goals. I wanted to share it with him. I have a really good relationship with him, he is my friend, and I wish him and all Madrid fans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
Jude Bellingham scored with a header in the 38th minute and Sevilla lost defender Marcao to a second booking for rash tackles with 20 minutes left.
Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda also was expelled by the referee during the halftime break apparently for protesting.
Alonso has been under pressure for several weeks due to a run of bad results and the overall lackluster play of his star-studded side. Spanish sports media is rife with speculation the first-year coach could be replaced.
Now Madrid club president Florentino Pérez will have two weeks to ponder the team’s future before its next game against Real Betis on Jan. 4.
Alonso could have ill afforded another slip at the Santiago Bernabeu after his side lost its previous two games. But Madrid’s fans still had reason to grumble after Sevilla repeatedly created scoring chances — even after being reduced to 10 men.
Alexis Sánchez, still spry at age 37, and right back Juanlu Sánchez stood out the most for a Sevilla side that poked holes in Madrid’s defense.
Madrid needed Thibaut Courtois to deny Alexis, Isaac Romero and Alfonso González on four strikes in the second half. But Sevilla could have gone ahead if it had just showed more finishing touch early on.
The result was still in doubt until Mbappé converted his spot kick after Juanlu fouled Rodrygo in the area.
Madrid is in second place at one point behind Barcelona before the leader visits third-placed Villarreal on Sunday.
