ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of United Arab Emirates announced in a Twitter post on Sunday that a commercial facility established to process Panjgur dates in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province had launched its production work.
The project, which was implemented on the instructions of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.
The UAE is also working on a number of other development and humanitarian projects in Pakistan.
“In keeping with the instructions of the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, commercial production at the Dates Processing Plant Panjgur has started in Pakistan,” said the Twitter post. “The project, which cost $6.5 million, was implemented in Balochistan’s Panjgur area with the financial assistance of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.”
Balochistan’s Makran division is famous for producing different varieties of dates.
However, the region lacked proper processing and cold storage facilities, making it difficult for date farmers to unleash its true commercial potential.
With the implementation of the UAE-sponsored project, residents of the area are also expected to get enhanced livelihood opportunities.
