WhatsApp targeted in EU consumer complaints over privacy changes

  • Critics say WhatsApp is “unfairly pressuring” users to accept its new policies.

LONDON: Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp faced a barrage of complaints on July 12 by the European Consumer Organization and others over a privacy policy update, which has prompted a global outcry and led some users to switch to rival apps Telegram and Signal.

WhatsApp in January introduced a privacy policy, which allows it to share some data with Facebook and other group firms. It said that the changes permit users to message with businesses and would not affect personal conversations.

The European Consumer Organization and eight of its members criticized the changes and filed complaints with the European Commission and the European network of consumer authorities, saying WhatsApp was unfairly pressuring users to accept its new policies.

“The content of these notifications, their nature, timing and recurrence put an undue pressure on users and impair their freedom of choice. As such, they are a breach of the EU Directive on Unfair Commercial Practices,” the groups said in a joint statement.

“WhatsApp has failed to explain in plain and intelligible language the nature of the changes . . . This ambiguity amounts to a breach of EU consumer law which obliges companies to use clear and transparent contract terms and commercial communications,” they said.

The groups urged the European network of consumer authorities and EU data protection authorities to work together to address these privacy and consumer rights concerns.

‘Tehran’ producer Dana Eden found dead in Athens hotel room

  • Greek police say death being treated as suicide

DUBAI: Dana Eden, a producer of the Israeli thriller series “Tehran,” was found dead in her hotel room in Athens on Sunday, according to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan.

The 52-year-old was reportedly in Greece for the filming of the show’s fourth season, which stars Niv Sultan, Shaun Toub, and Hugh Laurie.

Greek police said that the cause of death had not been officially confirmed but that the case was being treated as a suicide based on available evidence and witness testimony, according to media reports.

Eden co-led the production company Donna and Shula Productions with showrunner Shula Spiegel.

In a statement issued Monday, the company said that “the rumors about criminal death or about a national background are not true and are not grounded,” and urged the media and public to “behave responsibly and sensibly” and “refrain from publishing unverified assumptions.

“It’s a moment of great pain for the family, friends and colleagues. We ask to preserve Dana’s dignity and the privacy of her dears,” the statement added.
