KSA achieves fourth-fastest emissions reductions in G20

Data recently released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has shown that Saudi Arabia lowered its emissions by 15 million tons (Mt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) or by 2.7 percent in 2018, giving it the fourth-fastest fall in emissions in the G20 group of countries behind Mexico, Germany and France. This is significant as it is Saudi Arabia’s first large policy-induced reduction in CO2 emissions.

The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) released an analysis of the data at the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), known as COP25, held last week in Madrid.

Dr. Nicholas Howarth, a co-author of the report, said that 74 percent of the fall was attributable to improving energy intensity and 26 percent due to a fall in the carbon intensity of the economy as the Kingdom lowered its domestic consumption of oil.

“Energy efficiency and structural reform policies are combining to lower the Kingdom’s energy intensity, lifting energy productivity. This has been the most significant driver of lower CO2 emissions in the Kingdom,” he said.

Thamir Al-Shehri, another author of the analysis, said that in 2018, Saudi Arabia’s emissions were stable or falling in all energy-consuming sectors of the economy, with transport delivering the majority of the reductions, falling by 13.25 MtCO2 or 11 percent compared with the year before. The share of natural gas in the fuel mix, which is 25 percent less carbon-intensive than oil, has also risen from 32 percent in 2015 to 38 percent in 2018.

“Energy price reforms and stronger energy efficiency standards have combined to stabilize and lower the Kingdom’s historically fast emissions growth in the last three years. What we see in the data is the first signs of the energy transition toward more sustainable use in action,” Al-Shehri said.

Co-author Dr. Alessandro Lanza said the amount of crude oil burned to produce electricity has fallen by around 10 percent each year for the last three years, diesel consumption fell by 15 percent in 2017 and 12 percent in 2018, and total oil products consumed fell by 7 percent in 2018.

“This has the dual benefit of freeing up valuable oil for higher value uses in petrochemicals and export, in addition to lowering the Kingdom’s CO2 emissions,” Dr. Lanza said. “It also shows how climate policies can be aligned with supporting economic growth and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.”

Kerten Hospitality doubles Q1 growth on back of Saudi expansion

Kerten Hospitality, a global leader in bespoke hospitality and integrated living solutions, has announced it has doubled year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2024. The hospitality company now boasts more than 57 projects across key global markets, including Rome, South of France, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

In a strategic display of its expanding portfolio, Kerten Hospitality participated prominently at the Future Hospitality Summit held in Riyadh, featuring a booth that highlighted several of Kerten Hospitality’s hotels in Saudi Arabia, and showcased the brand’s synergy with the Saudi Ministry of Tourism and Aseer Investment Company.

The House Urban Eco Resort in Riyadh city center, a standout project highlighted by Kerten Hospitality in partnership with developers RIKAZ and RAFAL and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, garnered significant attention. The resort is poised to redefine urban eco-living. It seamlessly integrates leisure, wellness, and business within a sustainable and luxurious environment, showcasing a new standard in urban development.

The summit also served as a platform to highlight Kerten Hospitality’s strategic partnerships, notably with Aseer Investment Company, aiming to unlock substantial opportunities in the Aseer region’s hospitality and heritage sectors.

Moreover, Kerten Hospitality and Baheej Tourism Development Company announced their partnership, facilitated by ASFAR, poised to elevate integrated living in Yanbu’s waterfront. The agreement, which was signed at the summit in Riyadh, will see Kerten Hospitality managing Baheej’s hotel in Yanbu under the premium Cloud 7 brand, an innovative hotel and residence lifestyle brand known for its vibrant designs, dynamic check-in lobbies, healthy food options, a beach club, and curated retail boutiques.

“Kerten Hospitality is set on a trajectory of innovation and growth. Our significant expansion in the first quarter is not just about scale, but also about deepening our engagement with local cultures and communities,” said Marloes Knippenberg, CEO of Kerten Hospitality. “Each project is a reflection of our commitment to creating spaces where bespoke meets local.”

Notably, the FHS booth featured a recreation of the Dar Tantora The House Hotel, an emblem of AlUla’s cultural heritage, and displayed classic cars at the entrance, symbolizing the unique character of the hotel. The 30-key hotel was restored using the same ancient materials and architectural techniques as the traditional mud brick buildings of the area.

At the forefront of Kerten Hospitality’s Saudi expansion is “The Collective by Kerten Hospitality,” an initiative designed to group a network of 23 culturally rooted, yet innovative hospitality ventures. This initiative not only emphasizes the aesthetic appeal of its properties but also focuses on the strategic alignment of business goals with local cultural values, which has proven essential for the sustainable growth of the global portfolio.

Kerten Hospitality’s Nakhati brand, a culinary initiative, was also featured at the summit. Kerten Hospitality has announced an ambitious plan to empower 50 Saudi female entrepreneurs through strategic partnerships to provide the opportunity for a single-family office to franchise 30 kiosks and 20 carts.

Nakhati also announced a unique collaboration with giga-project Diriyah Gate, where it will produce an exclusive Diriyah flavor available at Bujairi Terrace, to celebrate the region’s rich heritage and flavors.

This quarter also marked the initiation of a significant partnership with Kayali, a perfume brand led by entrepreneur Mona Kattan.

Developed in partnership with Dubai Holding, a diversified global investment company with investments in 31 countries, Athlon represents the joint venture’s second residential project in Dubai, building upon the resounding success of Haven by Aldar, launched in late 2023.

As we witness an unwavering demand for unparalleled residential developments in Dubai, from both local and international investors, we are confident that Athlon’s groundbreaking concept will captivate a diverse range of investors and homeowners, setting a new standard for active living in the region.”
Located beside Global Village, the luxurious development is defined by a seamless connection of interactive green spaces — where athletic spaces merge with green walkways and vibrant parks — and features tailored activities to suit every age and interest.
Expertly planned around a captivating central park that forms the community’s beating heart, Athlon — inspired by the Greek word for “place of contest” — features four additional parks — Adventure, Play, Wellness, and Valley — as well as a total of seven clubhouses, weaving dedicated zones for fitness and socializing throughout the community. The community features more than 10 km of tracks, trails, and loops — with the cycling loop connected directly to Al-Qudra’s iconic track — offering boundless opportunities to indulge in jogging, cycling, roller-skating, and functional training within the community.
From activities that push limits, to those focused on well-being, sports, play, and gathering, the entire emotional and psychological spectrum of wellness has been carefully considered throughout Athlon, for the benefit of its residents, visitors, and workers. State-of-the-art amenities here include a café, massage rooms, jacuzzi, sauna, yoga room, gym, and a kids’ playroom.
Surrounding the parks, the residences, featuring 1,492 units ranging from three- to four-bedroom townhouses, three- to five-bedroom standard villas, and four- to six-bedroom premium villas have been designed to maximize natural light and use colors and materials that enhance the sense of space and well-being.
In line with Aldar’s commitment to sustainability and achieving its net-zero targets, Athlon will be developed with an emphasis on efficient and low-carbon design principles. This approach will be supported by the use of locally sourced and low-carbon materials, as well as the adoption of responsible and green construction practices.
The development has achieved LEED Platinum pre-certification, incorporating features such as energy-efficient and water-saving fixtures, electric vehicle charging facilities, smart waste disposal systems, and access to public transportation.
