RIYADH: Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso, head of the EU delegation to  Saudi Arabia, met Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Space Commission.

D’Urso congratulated Prince Sultan on his role in supervising the Kingdom’s space sector, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

They reviewed various fields of cooperation between the Kingdom and the EU, particularly space science, communications and space programs.

D’Urso praised Prince Sultan’s supervision of the Kingdom’s tourism sector and national heritage.

Before joining the space commission last December, Prince Sultan was president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), the Kingdom’s main tourism body.

He is a former Royal Saudi Air Force pilot who flew on the American STS-51-G Space Shuttle mission as a payload specialist. 

He is the first member of a royal family to be an astronaut, and the first Arab and Muslim to fly in space.

The EU delegation to Saudi Arabia, a fully accredited diplomatic mission, was officially opened in Riyadh in 2004, and represents the bloc to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretariat.

The delegation has a mandate to speak on behalf of EU member states when there is unanimous agreement on foreign policy issues.

With the aim of helping to integrate Gulf and European economies, the delegation facilitates trade relations with Gulf countries. The EU is the largest trading partner
of the GCC.

Saudi defense minister receives Mukalla port director, thanks him for heroic role

RIYADH: Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman received the director of the Port of Mukalla Salem Basamir on Tuesday.
In a post on social media platform X, Prince Khalid thanked Basamir for his heroic and humanitarian role in ensuring safety and protecting lives and property at the port.
The Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen carried out a limited airstrike in December targeting foreign military support at the Port of Mukalla in the Hadramaut governorate, where calm has been restored after a period of tension.
In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency following the strikes, coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said two ships coming from the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates entered the Port of Mukalla without obtaining official permits from the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition.
“The crews of the two ships disabled their tracking systems and unloaded a large quantity of weapons and combat vehicles to support the Southern Transitional Council forces in the eastern governorates of Yemen (Hadramaut and Al-Mahra) with the aim of fueling the conflict. This is a clear violation of the truce and the pursuit of a peaceful solution, as well as a violation of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2216,” said the spokesman.
