Third time lucky Quetta Gladiators beat Peshawar Zalmi to win Pakistan Super League

  • The Quetta team has reached the final match of PSL three time before but won for the first time
  • Peshawar Zalmi set a 138-run target for Quetta Gladiators to chase, which it beat, at the final played at the Karachi National Cricket Stadium

ISLAMABAD: Quetta Gladiators beat Peshawar Zalmi with eight wickets to spare in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final on Sunday, the fourth and largest edition of the national cricket league tournament that has been called the biggest sporting event in Pakistan’s history.

The Quetta team has reached the final match of PSL three time before but won for the first time.

“Pakistan is a safe place for World cricket,” Pakistani analysts Mazar Abbas said. “We love cricket and are ready to welcome any team.”

Ahmer Naqvi, a cricket writer with ESPNcricinfo said: “Massive congratulations to Quetta Gladiators. Delighted for the city and its people who rarely get celebrated by our mainstream. Delighted for Nadeem Omar, a brilliant person and patron. Delighted for Saifi the captain, who picks up yet another trophy.”

The first 26 matches of the tournament were played in the United Arab Emirates and the last eight in Pakistan’s seaside financial hub of Karachi. Some 40 foreign players, led by former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, current New Zealand opener Colin Munro and West Indian stars Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard, were part of the series.

The final was dominated by security concerns as 13,000 policemen, including hundreds of senior officers, took to the field to ensure a peaceful game. Over 2,500 paramilitary Rangers guards and hundreds of soldiers from the Frontier Constabulary were also on duty as part of security arrangements for the final game.

The South Asian nation has been largely starved of international cricket since a 2009 attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore killed eight Pakistanis and wounded six players and a British coach. The incident forced Pakistan to play home matches in the United Arab Emirates and led foreign players to refuse to play on Pakistani soil.

But the unprecedented popularity of Pakistan Super League, which has brought 40 foreign players to the country this year, is seen not just as pivotal in changing the global cricket community’s opinion of Pakistan’s ability to host international matches but also become a symbol of a brash, emerging nation trying to end years of isolation due to security threats and terrorist attacks.

Pakistan Cricket Board officials said before the first season of the league in 2016, over a hundred international players approach by the board to play on Pakistani soil refused, citing security concerns. This year’s edition comprises over 40 foreign players including former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and current New Zealand opener Colin Munro.

“The successful hosting of both cricket matches as well as international stars in Pakistan has been used by the state to project how the country is now peaceful and overcoming its battle with terrorism,” Naqvi said. “It's clear that the symbolic value of the league goes well beyond sports.”

Man United climb to third, Fulham sink sorry Spurs

  • Red Devils have taken their tally to 19 points from a possible 21

LONDON: Benjamin Sesko stretched his hot streak with the winning goal as Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 to go third in the Premier League, while Tottenham failed to dispel relegation fears after defeat at Fulham.

Sesko was handed his first start in seven games since Michael Carrick took charge at Old Trafford and rewarded his boss with another vital goal to edge United closer to a return to the Champions League.

Palace had taken an early lead at Old Trafford when Maxence Lacroix outmuscled Leny Yoro to guide in a header from Brennan Johnson’s corner.

But United hit back to remain unbeaten under Carrick and take their tally to 19 points from a possible 21.

The game swung on one incident as Lacroix was sent off and conceded a penalty for pulling back Matheus Cunha just before the hour mark.

Bruno Fernandes confidently stroked the resulting spot kick past former teammate Dean Henderson.

Fernandes was then the creator for the second as his curling cross was powered in by Sesko.

The Slovenian has now scored seven times in his last eight appearances to quieten critics of his £74 million ($100 million) price tag after a slow start to his career in England.

Tottenham remain perilously poised just four points above the relegation zone as interim boss Igor Tudor again failed to halt their alarming slide after a 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage.

Harry Wilson and Alex Iwobi gave Fulham a deserved half-time lead as they moved up to ninth and back into contention for European football next season.

Richarlison headed in a late consolation for Tottenham, but they remain the only Premier League side without a win in 2026.

The one crumb of comfort for Spurs was defeat for relegation rivals Nottingham Forest, 2-1 at Brighton.

All three goals arrived in the first 15 minutes as Diego Gomez and Danny Welbeck netted for the Seagulls either side of Morgan Gibbs-White’s reply.

Forest sit two points above the drop zone ahead of a daunting trip to Manchester City on Wednesday.
