ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani on Friday invited Krishna Kumari, a Hindu woman from Tharparkar, to chair the session of the Upper House of Parliament to mark the International Women’s Day.

Kumari belongs to a socially disadvantaged caste of the minority Hindu community and has been a member of the Senate since March 2018. A representative of the Pakistan Peoples Party, she is known for her campaigns for women’s rights and against bonded labor.

As she started chairing the session, the senator said she considered herself lucky to be occupying the most prominent place in the august house. She also thanked Pakistan and its people, saying she was “proud to be a Pakistani and only Pakistani.”

Last week, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf administration sacked Punjab’s information minister, Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan, after he made an insulting remark that targeted the Hindu community. In response, Prime Minister Imran Khan told Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to act against his cabinet member, making sure that Chohan was removed from his ministerial post.
