Female prisoners give time to handicrafts

Mardan Central Prison is considered the largest, capacity-wise, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. It holds more than 1,720 prisoners, including some 70 women.
The prison is divided into three sections: juvenile (under 18), women and men. A few women have their children with them behind bars. 
Women prisoners spend their time making handicrafts including girly accessories such as bangles, decorating mirrors and pens, table runners, charts for hanging and tissue boxes, and knitting girls’ woolen shirts and sweaters as well. Some ladies make drawstrings and doing embroidery on fabric.
A few of them were knitting covers for their water cooler to prevent dust, and also designing covers for the Qur’an. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prison service is quite flexible in allowing women prisoners to make these handicrafts. Some prisoners see this activity as something to pass the time, while some do it to earn money and make gifts for each other. 
These prisoners also have sports facilities, watch television, and some have radios. They also have hot and cold water available.
