Head of Egyptian university hospital resigns following deadly elevator accident

The head of an Egyptian university hospital where a deadly elevator accident occurred last week submitted his resignation on Sunday.
Seven people were killed and four injured after an elevator at Benha University Hospital collapsed from the seventh floor after one of the elevator’s cables gave way, media reports have said.
The victims, who where at the hospital to visit their ill grandmother, were standing in the elevator when it collapsed.
The Ministry of Higher Education had earlier dismissed a number of other hospital officials, including the administrative and engineering directors of the hospital.
Egypt’s Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek ordered a four-day detention for the director of the maintenance company responsible for the technical maintenance of the hospital’s elevators, according to Ahram Online.
Sadek also ordered the arrest of another four officials in the company.
Investigations revealed that there was no anti-fall safety device to prevent it from falling, adding that the elevator’s maximum load was 1,000kg, with a capacity of 10 people. There had been no official indication that the elevator was overloaded at the time of the incident.
Egyptian Minister of Higher Education Khaled Abdel-Ghafer ordered EGP100,000 ($5,668) in compensation for the families of each victim, and EGP50,000 for each person injured.
