Trump set to call King Salman — White House

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will speak by phone with King Salman and United Arab Emirates on Sunday, amid an uproar over his travel ban for some Muslim majority countries.
The new Republican president, who took office on January 20, first will speak with King Salman, followed by the crown prince of the UAE, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the White House said in a brief statement.
Neither Saudi Arabia nor the UAE are among the seven Muslim-majority countries affected by Trump’s sweeping executive order Friday barring visas for 90 days to migrants or visitors from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
The migrant crackdown, which also included a 120-day suspension of the US refugee resettlement program, sparked protests across the United States on Saturday.
A federal judge late Saturday blocked part of the temporary immigration ban, ordering authorities to stop deporting refugees and other travelers stuck at US airports.
Trump also will talk to the acting president of South Korea, Hwang Kyo-Ahn, the White House said.
Trump’s planned phone call with South Korea’s acting president comes as North Korea steps up its nuclear and missile capabilities. Pyongyang’s missile program and its pursuit of nuclear arms have drawn repeated sanctions from the UN Security Council.
Regime leader Kim Jong-Un said in a New Year speech that the country was in the “final stages” of developing an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Such an ICBM could theoretically target the United States.

Iranian foreign minister calls Saudi counterpart ahead of nuclear talks with US

  • They discuss importance of resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy
  • Regional powers pushed for the talks, scheduled for Friday in Oman, between Tehran and Washington

LONDON: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a telephone call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Wednesday ahead of critical nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington.

They discussed the importance of resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy, as well as efforts to maintain the security and stability of the region, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Regional powers had pushed for the talks, scheduled for Friday in Oman, between Iran and the US in an attempt to reach an agreement regarding Tehran’s nuclear program and prevent another escalation in the region.

In a message confirming the talks, posted on social media platform X on Wednesday, Araghchi wrote: “Nuclear talks with the United States are scheduled to be held in Muscat on about 10 a.m. Friday. I’m grateful to our Omani brothers for making all necessary arrangements.”
