ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday rejected the appeal of Imran Ali, who was convicted of the murder and rape of 7-year-old Zainab. The court upheld the death sentence passed down by an anti-terrorism court on Feb. 17.
The murder and rape of Zainab sparked protests and anger across Pakistan. She went missing on Jan. 4, and five days later her body was found in a garbage heap in Kasur district, near Lahore in Punjab province.
Punjab authorities said Ali was involved in attacks and killings of at least five other girls. In and around Kasur in the last two years, at least 12 cases of child murder have been reported.
After Zainab’s murder, the Punjab government formed an investigation team that interviewed around 1,100 people, many of whom had their DNA tested. This led to Ali being found guilty.
