ISLAMABAD: Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov arrived in Pakistan on a daylong visit to discuss the Afghan peace process on Friday.

An official handout circulated by Pakistan’s foreign office described the visit as the outcome of Islamabad’s “diplomatic outreach,” adding that it would further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The Russian envoy met Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and discussed matter of mutual interest and regional security situation.

Kabulov appreciated the positive role played by Pakistan to facilitate Afghan peace process.

The visiting dignitary is also scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq to exchange views on Afghan peace.

Prior to his arrival in Pakistan, the Russian official told his country’s state media on Wednesday that the Taliban were “flawlessly” adhering to the peace agreement negotiated in Qatar, adding that the United States was guilty of violating it.

He also said that Moscow was planning to arrange a multilateral meeting with China, Pakistan, Iran and the United States to reach a “collective mechanism” to bring warring Afghan factions back to the negotiating table and help resume peace talks between the Taliban and the administration in Kabul.
