ISLAMABAD: A joint investigation team (JIT) constituted by the Punjab provincial administration to probe a gun attack on former prime minister Imran Khan’s anti-government march in Wazirabad formally began its work by visiting the crime scene on Thursday, even as the federal authorities have expressed reservations over its composition.

Khan, who was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote in April after losing parliamentary majority, kicked off his protest march to the federal capital from the country's eastern city of Lahore last month to mount pressure on the government to announce early general elections in Pakistan.

However, a gunman targeted the rally in Wazirabad city on November 3, killing a supporter of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and injuring the former premier and 10 others with gunshot wounds.

"Khurram Ali Shah and Naseebullah, the two members of JIT, visited the crime scene [on Thursday]," reported Samaa TV, adding the team was trying to piece together "more digital evidence from the crime scene."

While the JIT was formed under the anti-terrorism act to probe the incident, the federal interior ministry wrote a letter to the Punjab government to include representatives of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) to ensure transparent inquiry.

"It has also told the Punjab government to include police officials, who were held in high esteem for their performances, in the team," said The Express Tribune. "The ministry complained to the Punjab government that it had formed a five-member JIT with no inclusion of any intelligence official."

However, the Punjab administration dismissed the federal government's concerns, saying the JIT had been formed by following proper legal procedure and pointing out it was not necessary for it to include representatives of any federal agency.

It is pertinent to mention here that Khan accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and a top official of the ISI spy agency of masterminding the attack against him.

He also pointed out he could not get a police report registered after the incident which mentioned all the three names, even as the attack had taken place in Punjab which is ruled by his own political party and allies.
