ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi is currently in China on two-day official visit to express Pakistan’s support and solidarity toward its strongest regional ally, according to the foreign office.
In a statement issued Monday, the FO said Alvi’s visit “aimed at conveying strong support and solidarity of Pakistan toward the government and the people of China while Beijing was resolutely engaged in efforts to contain and deal with the spread of Covid-19.”
He is visiting China upon the invitation of President Xi Jinping and is accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Planning Minister Asad Umar among other senior government officials.
The visit will serve as “an opportunity for the leadership of the two countries to review bilateral, regional and international issues and to advance the shared goals of promoting peace, prosperity and development in the region and beyond,” the statement read.
President Alvi is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart and a number of agreements are expected to be signed, the FO said.
The visit comes at a time when 1,094 Pakistani students are stranded in China’s Hubei province, most of them in Wuhan city, the epicenter of the deadly viral outbreak, where they have been stranded since a lockdown was enforced on Jan. 23 by the Chinese government.
