ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said he is personally overseeing the country’s coronavirus response, as the number of confirmed cases is at least 30, according to National Institute of Health (NIH) data from Sunday.
“I want to inform the nation I am personally overseeing measures to deal with COVID-19 & will address the nation soon. I would advise people to follow safety instructions issued by our govt. While there is a need for caution there is no need for panic,” Khan wrote in a Twitter post on Saturday.
“We are alert to the dangers & have put in place sufficient protocols for the safety and health of our people,” the premier added.
Khan said the World Health Organization had commended Pakistan’s efforts as being “among the best in the world.”
Pakistan on Friday announced emergency measures to prevent the virus spread in the country, sealing its borders with Iran and Afghanistan, closing all educational institutions until April 5, and banning mass public gatherings.
The country’s National Assembly has also called off all its sessions for the time being as part of the measures taken by the government to fight coronavirus in the country.
According to latest statistics, the virus has spread to over 135 countries in the world, affecting more than 150,000 people and claiming more than 5,000 lives.
