ISLAMABAD: A petition seeking the public hanging of Kasur’s serial killer, Imran Ali, was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday.
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader Ishtiaq Chaudhry moved the petition in the LHC, calling for the public execution of Imran Ali, who has been sentenced to death after being identified through a DNA test as responsible for the abduction, rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab Ansari.
The petitioner asked the court to issue orders for the publicly hanging as there was no need to make an amendment to the law to provide for public executions in the country. He asked that the convict be hanged over the same pile of litter where Zainab’s body was found.
On Saturday, in the swiftest trial of Pakistan’s history, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sentenced Imran Ali to four death penalties. The ATC also sentenced him to life imprisonment and a separate seven-year term, while imposing a fine of 3.1 million Pakistani rupees. He has also been ordered to pay 1 million Pakistani rupees in compensation to Zainab’s family.
After the verdict, Zainab’s mother told reporters: “We agree with the judge’s verdict, but still demand that he [Imran Ali] be hanged in public … he should be hanged at the same place where he took our child,” she said.
