ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani soldier was killed in a militant attack in the country's northwest close to the border with Afghanistan, the Pakistani military said on Sunday.
Militants opened fire "from inside Afghanistan" on a Pakistani post in the Hassan Khel sector in North Waziristan district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani military's media wing said in a statement.
It said an ensuing exchange of fire between both sides resulted in the killing of the soldier.
"Pakistan has consistently been requesting Afghanistan to ensure effective border management," the ISPR said.
"Pakistan strongly condemns the use of Afghan soil by terrorists for activates against Pakistan."
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Pakistani Taliban militants have often targeted security forces and pro-government tribal elders in Pakistan's northwest.
The Pakistani Taliban are a separate group but are allies of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan more than a year ago as the US and NATO troops were in the final stages of their pullout.
The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan has emboldened the Pakistani Taliban, or the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
A months-long ceasefire between the TTP and Pakistan is intact.
Although the Taliban in Afghanistan have encouraged Islamabad and the TTP to reach a peace agreement, talks between the two sides that started in May have not had results.
