ISLAMABAD: Pakistan set a new all-time high for coronavirus numbers in a 24-hour period on Monday, reporting 3,795 new infections and 37 deaths, to surpass the total tally of 420,294 cases and 8,398 fatalities, according to government data.

After a peak of more than 6,800 daily infections in June, the numbers fell to as low as 213 in August.

On Sunday, authorities in Islamabad sealed off the main hall of the Faisal Mosque, the city’s largest, for noncompliance of anti-coronavirus measures on Friday.

Congregational prayers will no longer be allowed inside the facility but can be offered in the courtyard.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s administration ruled against imposing a complete lockdown, choosing instead to continue a “smart lockdown” policy with strict implementation of safety guidelines.

The country’s last comprehensive lockdown was lifted in May.
