ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan has said that after the successful completion of kinetic operations, the country is now “consolidating our gains under a comprehensive National Action Plan to deny space to the terrorists to re-group or re-establish their networks.”
While addressing the 7th Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS 2018), Khan emphasized Pakistan’s success in countering terrorism through military operations.
The defense minister offered to share Pakistan’s hard-won and extensive counterterrorism experience with international partners.
In a wide-ranging speech, Khan appreciated Russia’s role in combating Daesh in Syria, but warned that “non-state actors representing conflicting interests in the region will continue to threaten the fragile peace process in Syria.”
In his speech at the MCIS 2018, the Defense Minister expressed concern at presence of Daesh in Afghanistan and the use of drug money for terror financing as a consequence of the phenomenal rise in drug cultivation in Afghanistan.
Khan supported Russia’s efforts to develop a regional approach to cessation of the conflict in Afghanistan.
“Pakistan maintains that an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led internal reconciliation process is the only viable option for sustainable peace in Afghanistan,” the defense minister’s office said in a statement.
During his visit to Moscow, Khan also met his Russian counterpart, Defense Minister General Sergei Shoigu, and discussed the burgeoning defense relations between the two nations.
On the sidelines of MCIS 2018, Khan, who is also Pakistan co-chair of the Pak-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission, will meet his Russian counterpart Denis Manturov, the Russian minister for trade and industry.
