ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning against urban flooding this week, saying heavy rains would lash most parts of the country, including Islamabad, from Monday to Wednesday.
“Heavy rains could threaten urban flooding in urban areas from Monday to Wednesday,” PMD said in a weather alert issued on August 31. “There is also a risk of landslides in mountainous areas. All concerned agencies especially reservoir operators/water managers should remain alert.”
In a separate alert, the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said heavy rainfall could generate urban and flash flooding and land sliding in vulnerable areas on Monday and Tuesday.
“Flows are expected to increase significantly in rivers, streams and local nullahs,” the NDMA said.
As per NDMA data, between June 15 and August 31, 176 people were killed and 101 injured in rain-related incidents around the country. The southern Sindh province has been the worst-hit, with 72 dead, including 17 children.
