ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s foreign office announced on Wednesday the country had been elected to three UN bodies that played a pivotal role in enhancing international cooperation on significant social and economic issues.

According to its official statement, Pakistan will assume the membership of UN commissions on crime prevention and criminal justice, population and development, and status of women from the beginning of the next year.

The elections were conducted at the Economic and Social Council, a 54-member principal organ of the United Nations, in which Pakistan received the unanimous endorsement of all members for the first two committees and received 50 votes for the last one.

“Pakistan’s simultaneous election to these three important Commissions is a reflection of the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s active role and constructive contributions at the United Nations,” said the foreign office.

The statement added that the country would foster international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime, improving criminal justice administration systems, promoting gender equality and women empowerment, and supporting initiatives aimed at assisting countries in developing their capacity to produce and analyze population data and information.
