ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's election oversight body has notified results of the October 16 by-polls for national and provincial assembly seats, except for the six seats won by former prime minister Imran Khan whom it disqualified from holding any public office in an asset misrepresentation case last week, local media reported on Monday. 

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) held the by-elections on eight seats of the National Assembly, the lower house of Pakistan parliament, and three seats of the provincial assembly of Punjab. 

But the ECP only notified winners on two National Assembly seats and three others who emerged victorious in the Punjab Assembly constituencies, Pakistan's Dawn news website reported. 

"PPP’s Syed Ali Musa Gillani and Abdul Hakeem Baloch won from the NA-157 (Multan IV) and NA-237 (Malir II) constituencies," the report read, citing a list issued by the election regulatory body. 

"PML-N’s Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed has clinched the PP-139 seat from Sheikhupura, while PTI’s Muhammad Faisal Khan and Malik Muhammad Muzaffar Khan emerged victories in the constituencies PP-209 (Khanewal VII) and PP-241 (Bahawalnagar V), respectively." 

The ECP, in a separate notification issued on Monday, de-notified Khan as a member of the National Assembly (MNA), following his disqualification in the asset misrepresentation case that has come to be known as the Toshakhana Reference. 

The election oversight body last week disqualified Khan under article 63(1)(p) of the constitution for “deliberately” concealing material facts about proceeds from the sale of gifts he received as the prime minister in the statement of his assets and liabilities for year 2018-19.  

"In terms of Article 63(1)(p) ... Mr Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi is hereby denotified as Member National Assembly of Pakistan from Constituency No. NA-95 Mianwali-1 with immediate effect and the seat has become vacant accordingly," the ECP said in its notification on Monday. 

The article says that a person can be disqualified from being a member of parliament if “he is for the time being disqualified from being elected or chosen as a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or of a Provincial Assembly under any law for the time being in force.”  

Monday's notification of the ECP came hours after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected a request by Khan to suspend the decision of his disqualification from holding a public office.
