ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) elected Pakistan as the vice president of its Asian group, Pakistani media and Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday.

The Jeddah-based PUIC began its meeting in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Monday.

The PUIC is composed of parliaments of 54 member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Syed Fakhar Imam, the chairman of the national assembly’s Kashmir Committee, is leading Pakistan’s parliamentary delegation to Rabat.

According to a National Assembly statement released on Monday, the Pakistani delegation will apprise the PUIC forum about the “continued violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by India” as well as ‘atrocities’ committed by security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir. 

In a separate development on Tuesday, the Secretary-General of the OIC, Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen, approved humanitarian assistance for five educational projects in Niger and Uganda.

“It included providing financial support to the Islamic University in Niger by providing $ 250,000 to support its budget for the school year 2018-2019 and ensuring supervision of the university’s endowment project,” the OIC statement read.
