ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday condemned a gun attack on the Saudi embassy in the Netherlands.

No one was injured in the assault in The Hague on Thursday. Local media reported that about 20 shots were fired at the building.

The incident came a day after a bomb went off at a World War I commemoration attended by diplomats at a cemetery in the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah. At least two people were injured in the blast.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the shooting incident that targeted the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Dutch capital, The Hague. The shameful attack blatantly violated all international laws and norms,” the Pakistani foreign office said in a statement of Friday.

Dutch police said on Thursday that they had arrested a 40-year-old man from the town of Zoetermeer in connection with the shooting and appealed to witnesses to come forward.

“Pakistan appreciates prompt action by the Dutch authorities and hopes the perpetrators will soon be brought to justice,” the foreign office said, as it expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

“We stand by the Kingdom against any threat to its safety and security.”

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was taking the shooting “extremely seriously” and was in close contact with Saudi authorities.
