ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s military chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa confirmed reports of an army major being awarded a life sentence over misuse of authority, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate said in a statement released on Tuesday.

The army officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was tried by a Field General Court Martial.

"Pakistan Army, alive to its institutional accountability system, has dismissed the officer from service and sent him to jail for life," the statement added.

Earlier in May this year, Gen Bajwa had endorsed sentences for two senior ex-army officers and one civil officer "on the charges of espionage and leakage of sensitive information to foreign agencies."

On Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan, announced the extension of Gen. Bajwa's term in office. He was scheduled to retire in November this year, but will continue in office for three more years.
