ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Foreign Office on Wednesday said that none of its nationals were among those killed in a stampede which took place on Ashura day in the Iraqi city of Karbala and claimed the lives of more than 30 pilgrims.

The incident also left dozens of people injured on Tuesday.

“We offer our profound condolences over the loss of so many precious lives in the stampede in Karbala. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families,” Mohammad Faisal, the foreign office spokesperson, said in a tweet.

He added that Pakistan Embassy’s Camp Office in Karbala was closely monitoring the situation. “As per available information, Pakistani Zaireen (pilgrims) are safe,” Faisal said.

Tuesday’s incident was the deadliest to take place in recent years on a day where hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims gather to commemorate the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar.
