ISLAMABAD: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases reached 183 in Pakistan on Monday, after Sindh province confirmed 47 new infections.
The province’s tally rose to 150 as of Monday evening, Sindh Health Department spokesperson Meeran Yousaf confirmed to Arab News.
According to an earlier Twitter post by Sindh government spokesman Murtaza Wahab, most of the latest cases in Sindh are pilgrims returning from Iran who arrived through the Taftan border crossing.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which until Monday had no recorded coronavirus cases, confirmed that 15 persons have tested positive, the province’s health minister Taimur Khan Jhagra said in a tweet.
The infected also entered Pakistan through the Taftan border.
Although most of the people with COVID-19 infection had recently traveled to Iran, Pakistan reported its first locally contracted case on Friday.
The government shut all its schools and land borders on Friday and decided to limit international flights and discourage large gatherings to try to halt the spread of the coronavirus.
