ISLAMABAD: Islamabad on Thursday strongly condemned the Houthi drone attacks on the Saudi border city of Khamis Mushait, according to a statement issued by the country’s foreign office.
“Pakistan strongly condemns the latest attempt by Houthi militia to target civilians in Khamis Mushait, Saudi Arabia,” foreign ministry spokesperson Aisha Farooqui, said. “It is commendable that the bomb-laden UAV was successfully intercepted and destroyed” by the Saudi forces, she added.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Tuesday claimed responsibility for drone attacks on a military airport in Khamis Mushait — a city located in the Saudi southwestern region of Asir bordering northern Yemen.
“The attack was carried out by five bomb-laden drones Monday night,” according to Houthi militia spokesman, Yahya Sarea, quoted by the rebel-run Al-Masirah TV.
Pakistan foreign office said Islamabad “reaffirms its full support and solidarity with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against any threats to its security and territorial integrity.”
Yemen’s Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles and drones across the border into Saudi Arabian soil in recent months targeting military installations and civilians alike in the bordering region, as well attempting to strike the capital.
Most of the attacks were intercepted and foiled by Saudi air defense system.
On Tuesday, the Saudi Press Agency reported another incident where the Arab Coalition intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile targeting Najran city, southwest of the Kingdom.
The spokesman for the Arab Coalition forces, Col. Turki Al-Maliki, said that the missile was “targeting innocent civilians.”
“The Iran-backed militants have targeted Saudi Arabia with 313 ballistic missiles and 357 drones in total,” Col Al-Maliki added.
