KARACHI: Nuclear power plants in Pakistan’s southern port city are “very heavily protected,” the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, said on Wednesday.
The IAEA values its cooperation with Pakistan in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, and intends to continue working with it, he told a seminar.
Access to nuclear power should not be considered the sole prerogative of the developed world, he added.
The IAEA’s new motto is “atoms for peace and development,” he said, adding that it is wrong to think that the regulatory authority is only responsible for preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
This was Amano’s second visit to Pakistan. He inaugurated the Pakistan Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Security in March 2014.
His recent engagements in Pakistan included visits to various civilian facilities. He was also briefed on the application of nuclear technology in various sectors in the country, such as agriculture, water management, health and environmental protection.
Amano met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi earlier in the week. Abbasi told him that Pakistan can contribute to the IAEA’s programs and activities since the country has significant nuclear expertise and experience.
