LAHORE: The funeral prayer of five policemen killed on Wednesday night was offered in Lahore on Thursday.
Senior political and public figures, as well as relatives of the deceased, attended the funeral. A suicide bomber hit a police kiosk in Raiwind, 28 km from the city center of Lahore, killing nine people, including the five policemen. About two-dozen people, mostly policemen, were injured. Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility.
A police picket had been set up to provide security for 60,000 participants of a religious congregation.
“The police personnel were the target, not the participants of the congregation,” Punjab’s Home Affairs Minister Ayub Gadhi told Arab News.
Police personnel have been targeted four times in Lahore in the last year, with several dozen people killed or injured.
“Those who lost their lives in the line of duty are our heroes,” said Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif.
The minister for law and parliamentary affairs, Rana Sanaullah Khan, told Arab News: “Our forces have foiled many terrorism bids.”
The Punjab Assembly paid homage to the nine people who lost their lives, saying it “strongly condemns the cowardly attack” and offering condolences to their families.
The assembly unanimously passed a resolution acknowledging “the sacrifice of martyred police officials.”
