ISLAMABAD: Egypt’s Ambassador to Islamabad, Tarek Dahrough, met Pakistani minister for energy Omar Ayub Khan on Wednesday and discussed avenues to explore renewable energy projects.

“Ambassador expressed interest to extend mutual cooperation between Pakistan and Egypt on G2G [Government to Government] basis in field of energy including power generation, transmission and renewable energy projects,” the ministry of energy said in a statement. 

During the meeting Khan gave an overview of Pakistan’s energy sector, including a newly launched alternative renewable energy policy, and briefed the ambassador about the Pakistani government’s efforts to reform the country’s energy sector.

Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to “green energy” and said the government planned to diversify its energy mix by introducing up to ten percent hydel power projects in the next five years.

“The share of renewable energy to increase by 20% by 2025 and 30% by 2030 from current share of 2 percent in energy mix,” the statement said. “While explaining the investment potential in Power Sector, the Minister said that the Government would induct renewable energy-based power plants through open & transparent competitive bidding process.” 

Dahrough said he hoped both countries would forge cooperation in the energy sector to augment economic ties.
