ISLAMABAD: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has ranked Pakistan fourth among its member states in a list of countries to be worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak, the group said in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
The OIC placed Iran at the top of the list, followed by Turkey, Malaysia, and Pakistan.
With 208 new cases in the past 24 hours, the confirmed number of infections stands at 4,072 with 58 deaths reported in Pakistan.
According to the official data shared by Pakistan’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday, 42,159 tests have been conducted in the country, with State Minister for Health, Zaffar Mirza, tweeting on Tuesday night that the country would be gradually increasing its testing capabilities.
“Pakistan plans to increase its daily testing capacity for #coronavirus to 20,000 in coming days,” Mirza said, adding that, at present, only 6,584 people are being tested every day.
As part of the anti-virus measures, the government has imposed a partial lockdown, along with travel restrictions, both of which have added to the economic challenges.
According to the data shared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday, more than 1.28 million people have been infected by the virus, with over 72,000 deaths reported worldwide.
