ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani foreign office said on Tuesday Islamabad condemned aerial attacks on Riyadh, saying they threatened regional peace and violated international law.
Media reported an explosion was heard in the Saudi capital but the cause was not immediately known.
Several witnesses told Reuters they had heard two loud bangs and saw a small plume of smoke above the capital just before one p.m. local time. Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV cited local reports of an explosion and videos circulating on social media purporting to show a missile being intercepted over Riyadh.
No group has so far claimed responsibility.
“#Pakistan condemns the aerial attacks on #Riyadh,” the Pakistani foreign office said in a tweet. “These attacks threaten regional peace & violate international law. Pakistan reaffirms its support and solidarity with Saudi Arabia against any threats to its security and stability.”
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militia have carried out many cross-border attacks into Saudi Arabia using drones and missiles. Missile attacks and drone strikes claimed by Houthis have targeted civilian airports and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, occasionally reaching Riyadh.
