ISLAMABAD: A 22-year-old Careem captain was shot dead by unidentified gunmen Monday night in Rawalpindi.
Sajawal Ameer was shot multiple times as the assailants tried to seize his car, said a police official. The victim was taken to the closest hospital but died from his wounds early Tuesday morning.
Naseerabad police told local daily newspaper The Express Tribune: “The suspects tried to take away the car but the vehicle had a tracker installed which shut down its engine. They abandoned the car nearby and fled.”
While the car has been recovered and a case has been registered against unidentified persons, the victim received five gunshots and was also robbed of his cash and cellphone.
Data from the ride-hailing service provider Careem was collected and police were investigating the case. A senior police official said it was possible that the people who booked the car were the ones who killed Ameer. He clarified, however, that this was not confirmed and could be ascertained only after the investigation. There has no official confirmation of the number of people involved in the incident as no witness statement has yet been recorded.
Ameer, who was from Bhakkar district, worked as a Careem captain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. This was the second recent incident of its kind in the twin cities. Twenty-six-year-old Junaid Mustafa, who also worked as a Careem captain, was car-nabbed and shot dead by a man who booked a ride on Feb. 22 in Islamabad. The suspect was apprehended two days later.
