ISLAMABAD: At least 83 people have been killed and 74 others injured in separate rain-related accidents across Pakistan during the month of July, the country's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in its advisory on Tuesday.

Torrential rains and flash floods destroyed 324 houses leaving around 66 partially damaged with hundreds of people rendered homeless, the authority said.

According to the NDMA data for July, the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was the worst hit in the current monsoons where 25 people died and 21 others were injured.

The death toll in Punjab reached 23 with 36 people injured in separate rain-related accidents while 13 people were reported killed and 10 others injured in Sindh and Balochistan collectively.

Meanwhile, Pakistan administered Kashmir witnessed the loss of 22 lives and over 70 houses destroyed in July due to flash floods caused by a cloud burst.

The rains also damaged major infrastructure, disrupting life in cities across the country. Pakistan's metropolitan city of Karachi almost came to a halt on Tuesday due to heavy downpour where many low-lying areas were inundated leading to the provincial government closing schools and advising residents against leaving houses.

“Scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over the Upper Catchments of all the major rivers along with Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and East Balochistan from 31 July 2019 to 2 August 2019,” the NDMA warned.
