ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s anti-graft watchdog, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), recommended to the Ministry of the Interior on Monday to place the name of Ali Jahangir Siddiqui, Pakistan’s ambassador-designate to the US, on the Exit Control List.
Pakistan’s government earlier this month appointed Ali Jahangir to replace Aizaz Chaudhry, a career diplomat, as Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington.
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and his government is already under fire for naming Ali Jahangir as Pakistan’s ambassador to the US.
The NAB questioned Jahangir on March 22 over his alleged involvement in “siphoning off funds amounting to €23.76 million ($29.56 million) in 2008 for the purchase of an Italian company, Monte Bello SRL, using a foreign company, Fairytal SRL Sweden, which resulted in a loss to the company and shareholders.”
Ali Jahangir is currently serving as special assistant to the prime minister with the status of a minister of state. He is from an influential business family and the son of renowned businessman Jahangir Siddiqui.
Pakistani political parties and analysts have already raised concerns about the government’s decision to appoint an “inexperienced person” and non-career diplomat as ambassador to one of the world’s most important capitals.
