Maybin was injured while stepping on third base as he was trying to score from first on Donnie Murphy’sdouble. He hobbled home before being escorted to the clubhouse by a trainer. He is not expected to play for at least several days.
Maybin says he is sore and he hopes it is “just a day-to-day thing.”
Rays 5 Phillies 3, 10 innings: In Clearwater, Fla., J.A. Happ and Phillippe Aumont combined for five scoreless innings for Philadelphia.
Happ allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two in 2 1-3 innings. Aumont replaced him in the third and gave up two hits in 2 2-3 innings.
Top prospect Desmond Jennings singled and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th for Tampa Bay.
Diamondbacks 9, Rockies 3, 5 1/2 innings:
In Tucson, Ariz., Ian Kennedy pitched two scoreless innings in his first start for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kennedy walked one and gave up two hits. He was sent to the Diamondbacks by the Yankees in a three-team trade this winter. He is expected to be Arizona’s No. 4 starter.
Rockies left-hander Franklin Morales allowed eight runs in 1 2-3 innings. Morales, who is expected to start the season in the Colorado bullpen, gave up three-run home runs to Stephen Drewand Rusty Ryal. He also balked and walked two.
Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 1, 6 innings: In Tucson, Ariz., Aaron Cook pitched two-hit ball for three innings in his spring debut. Cook allowed two singles with two outs in the first then retired the final seven batters he faced and got five of nine outs on groundballs.
Melvin Mora, who had been hitless in his first six spring at-bats, had two doubles.
Mark Reynoldshad an infield single for Arizona.
Braves 9 Astros 4: In Kissimmee, Fla., Tommy Hanson gave up three runs—one earned—in 2 1-3 innings for Atlanta. He struck out three and said he felt fine with his effort.
Troy Glaus and Brian McCann each had three hits for the Braves.
Lance Berkman had two doubles for the Astros while starting pitcher Brian Moehlerallowed one run on four hits in two innings.
Pirates 15 Twins 5: In Bradenton, Fla., Minnesota’s Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer off Ross Ohlendorf in the first inning.
Bobby Crosbyhit a three-run homer off Anthony Crosby in the fourth inning. Pedro Alvarezhad an RBI triple in the second.
Twins 11 Yankees 0: In Fort Myers, Fla. (AP)—Scott Baker threw two effective innings and Jason Kubel homered for Minnesota.
Sergio Mitre, a long shot for the fifth spot in New York’s rotation, worked three scoreless innings. He struck out three, walked one and allowed two hits. Chad Gaudin, also a long shot for New York’s rotation, didn’t fare as well as Mitre. Gaudin gave up three runs and three hits in two-plus innings.
Juan Portes hit a grand slam and a two-run homer for the Twins.
Mets 6 Nationals 5: In Port Lucie, Fla., Oliver Perez looked shaky in his first spring start, but catcher Omir Santos hit an inside-the-park grand slam to help the Mets.
Perez, coming off a terrible 2009, allowed five runs and seven hits in three innings. The notoriously wild left-hander issued just one walk and struck out two.
Jason Marquis, who signed a free-agent deal with Washington in the offseason, also had a rough start in his first spring game. He gave up five runs and three hits in two innings.
Red Sox 5 Orioles 4: In Sarasota, Fla., Jeremy Guthrie threw 51 pitches and gave up a run and three hits in 2 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out two—Jacoby Ellsburyand David Ortiz.
Nick Markakis hit his second home run of the spring. It was Baltimore’s 12th homer in five games.
Guthrie has thrown 4 1-3 innings in his two starts, allowing one run and three hits.
Blue Jays 8 Tigers 5: In Dunedin, Fla., Detroit’s Jeremy Bonderman recorded just two outs and was charged with six runs and six hits. Jose Bautista connected for a leadoff homer, Randy Ruiz hit a grand slam went deep and Travis Snyder hit Bonderman’s 36th and last pitch for a sacrifice fly.
Vernon Wells added a two-run homer in the second for Toronto.
Blue Jays left-hander Brian Tallet allowed four runs and four hits in two innings.
