JEDDAH, 16 December 2007 — Jeddah police arrested a gang consisting of two Africans and one Yemeni that lured people to an apartment near Jeddah’s gold souq with promises of gold for sale at below-market value.

The Yemeni man allegedly played the role of the intermediary who would wander around the market in search of victims. He would show victims a piece of gold and talk them into going to the apartment to make a deal. Once there, the victims of this heist would be assaulted by the three men and robbed, police said.

The arrest was made when a victim of this crime identified one of the African men, who then allegedly confessed, which led to the arrest of the two other suspects.
