RIYADH: Jordan’s Samra Electric Power Generation Co. has signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with SITE Technology General Contracting to develop a 25-megawatt wind power project in Ma’an Governorate, fully funded by the UAE government.
The contract, which covers the design, supply and installation of five wind turbines at Batn Al Ghul, falls under a cooperation agreement signed in February between Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co., known as Masdar, the state news agency Petra reported.
Jordan has been accelerating renewable energy deployment as part of its national energy strategy. Renewable sources currently account for about 27 percent of the country’s electricity generation, with the government targeting more than 30 percent by 2030 through new solar, wind and energy storage projects.
The Cabinet also approved Jordan’s 2025–2035 energy strategy in May, which aims to raise the share of renewable energy to 40 percent of the electricity mix by 2035, alongside expanding wind and solar generation capacity and advancing green hydrogen projects.
“The project is intended to strengthen Jordan-UAE cooperation and support Jordan’s expansion of renewable energy projects, contributing to energy security and the transition toward clean and sustainable energy sources. It also supports national efforts to meet growing electricity demand through strategic projects aligned with sustainable development objectives,” Petra reported.
It added: “The project marks another milestone in the Jordanian-Emirati partnership and reflects the two countries’ commitment to advancing strategic initiatives that promote sustainable development.”
Masdar expands Jordan investment
The agreement builds on broader cooperation between Jordan and the UAE in renewable energy.
In June, Jordanian Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan and Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al-Ramahi discussed expanding the company’s investments in the country, including wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 2,000 MW, with technical studies for the projects being finalized ahead of implementation.
During the meeting, the prime minister also highlighted the UAE-funded 25 MW Batn Al Ghul wind project as part of Jordan’s efforts to increase the contribution of renewable energy to its electricity mix and strengthen long-term energy security.
Masdar already operates major renewable energy assets in Jordan, including the 200 MW Baynouna Solar Power Plant, the country’s largest solar project, and holds a 50 percent stake in the 117 MW Tafila Wind Farm.
