Matthias Jaissle heading to Newcastle in Premier League after Ahli exit, say reports

  • German coach has not agreed a contract extension with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli

DUBAI: Following the departure of Eddie Howe as Newcastle United’s manager, online reports are claiming that he could be replaced at the English Premier League club by Al-Ahli’s German coach Matthias Jaissle.

Jaissle has led the Jeddah club to back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in the last two seasons and is a hugely popular figure with Al-Ahli’s supporters. However, he has been unable to reach agreement with the club regarding a contract extension, and reports today on social media claimed that he has informed Al-Ahli of his exit, and is most likely on his way to Newcastle.

Al-Ahli have yet to put out a statement on his departure, and until yesterday he had been undertaking pre-season training with his players, but now reports in the British media claim he has been in advanced talks to take over at St. James’ Park.

Howe is leaving Newcastle after five years at the helm and having brought the club their first trophy in 56 years. He was Newcastle’s first and to date only managerial appointment to be enacted following the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021.

Al-Ahli could not be reached for comment.
