LONDON: Jordan’s air defense systems shot down five missiles fired from Iran on Wednesday, as the conflict between Tehran and the US entered its sixth month.
The Jordanian Armed Forces said the missiles were detected through the military’s surveillance and monitoring network, the Jordan News Agency reported.
A military spokesperson said that the country would continue to protect its borders and safeguard its security and sovereignty against foreign aggression.
Iran has targeted Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE with missiles and drones since its conflict with the US resumed on July 7. Tehran has repeatedly attempted to target US forces stationed at an air base in Al-Azraq, eastern Jordan.
US forces resumed their strikes on Iran after the failure of negotiations to resolve the conflict. The US Central Command announced the reimposition of a naval blockade of Iranian ports and fresh strikes on sites of military and civilian importance amid the diplomatic deadlock.
