RIYADH: The Gulf states and Jordan called on the UN Security Council to issue an urgent resolution to halt Iranian attacks on their territories, reaffirming their right to self-defense.
In a joint statement issued by the Gulf Cooperation Council’s secretariat on Thursday, Jordan and Gulf states highlighted their unified stance against Iranian attacks, warning that the continuing strikes threatened international peace and security.
The states said they could take necessary legal measures to protect their territories, citizens, commercial vessels and vital infrastructure in accordance with UN Charter “if these systematic and treacherous attacks do not cease.”
Iran has recently intensified its attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan as fighting between US and Tehran escalated.
In their joint statement, the states accused Tehran and allied armed groups of targeting civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, desalination plants, ports and airports, arguing that the attacks violate international law, UN conventions and commitments made under Iran’s June ceasefire agreement with the US.
They expressed full support for Saudi Arabia amid the Iran-backed Houthi targeting of vessels and threats to impose a naval blockade on the Kingdom, and welcomed Iraq’s efforts to bring all weapons under state control by Sept. 30 to prevent pro-Iranian factions and armed groups from launching attacks against neighbouring countries.
They also praised Saudi Arabia and Oman for their diplomatic efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen and acknowledged the Kingdom’s humanitarian and development assistance to the country.
